Can a cracked ruby be salvaged by cutting it to a smaller size or will the crack weaken it?

antiqueruby2000 asked: The jeweler cracked my ruby while working on it. Prior to that he had said it was priceless. He did replace it and I have the original stone as well. Can the cracked ruby be cut to a smaller size or has it lost all it’s value?
