How do you remove gilt from antique ruby glass without damaging the ruby glass?

I don’t want the 40th anniversary writing on it, but don’t want to damage the glass when I remove it. I believe the glass to be actual ruby glass, not ruby flashing, but am not positive about that.

Can a cracked ruby be salvaged by cutting it to a smaller size or will the crack weaken it?
